  • Language: English.
  • Level: Undergraduate Year-2.
  • Class Hours: 48
  • Short Description: The objective of this course is to introduce the basic concepts of probability and statistics, ranging from the interpretation of probability, conditional probability, random variables and distributions, expectation, parameter estimation, to hypothesis testing.
  • Course Aims: This course aims to introduce basic concepts of probability theory and mathematical statistics, and to help students apply probability distributions and statistical inferences to the analysis or evaluation of real data.

Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course:

  • State the basic concepts of probability and statistics.
  • Select and apply appropriate techniques of probabilistic computations to random experiments.
  • Explain the link between probability theory and mathematical statistics.
  • Apply probability distributions to descriptive statistics of observable data.
  • Analyse random samples and make statistical inferences about hypotheses.
  • Design solutions for complex problems in statistical surveys.

Assessment:

  • Homework: 25%
  • Closed-book final exam: 75%

Textbook:

  • Probability and Statistics (4th Edition), Morris H. DeGroot, Carnegie-Mellon University.

Course Team Slides

The course has a set of standardized slides developed by the Probability & Statistics Course Team at Glasgow College, UESTC.Out of respect for copyright and the team’s intellectual property, these official slides are not hosted here. Students who wish to consult them may typically obtain copies through internal academic channels (e.g., from senior students or peers within Glasgow College).

Note: A revised set of course team slides was produced in 2025, to which I made substantial contributions. As they closely resemble the lecture slides I use in class, they are also not separately distributed here to avoid redundancy.

  • Slides for Chapters 1–4, 百度网盘. Please do not share them outside the college. They are for internal use only. P.S. Please note that this link will be removed on December 31, 2025.
  • Slides for Chapters 6-9, 百度网盘. Please do not share them outside the college. They are for internal use only. P.S. Please note that this link will be removed on December 31, 2025.
